Liver Kampo
Japanese Kampo (Sho-saiko-to) is a unique approach to the
ancient art of Oriental herbal medicine. Rather than modifying
formulas as in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the Japanese
Kampo tradition uses fixed and precise combinations of herbs
in standardized amounts.
Extensive
modern scientific research in Japan has validated the efficacy
of Kampo formulas. Since 1967, the Japanese Ministry of Health
and Welfare has approved 148 Sho-saiko-to formulas for use
and has included them on a reimbursement list under the national
health insurance plan. Every approved formula produced by
different manufacturers is composed of exactly same ingredients
under the Ministry's standardization methodology.
Today fully 75% of Japanese physicians
prescribe Sho-saiko-to formulas.
Honso's pharmaceutical GMP facilities in Japan offer unrivaled
high standards, from identifying the best raw materials to
perfecting proprietary processing techniques that ensure maximum
quality, safety and health benefits. Every lot of the Honso® Kampo product is routinely tested by its QC department. The
tests cover heavy metals, purity, and microbial test.
Most importantly, as the Japanese Ministry requested, Honso
tests at least two key herbs' chemical compounds as the quality
control markers on every formula from blending of the raw
herbs to the end of production. This is a unique way to keep
ingredients consistency from batch to batch and from time
to time. In 1993, the Health Ministry has revised the Pharmaceutical
Affair Law. In 1994, Honso Pharmaceutical has re-examined
its overall manufacturing practice according to the "GMP
for Medical Products".
Major GMP procedures and specifications have been implemented
during 1996 to 1999. Since 1999, Honso has secured high-quality
raw herbs by stating the harvesting place and time. The agreements
have been established with the importing partners in compliance
with the GMP 1, "Regulations for Import, Sales and Quality
Control of Drugs".
At Honso, "we take science and quality as seriously as you
do. We share your interest in identifying the best Oriental
herbal formulas. We understand your concerns about safety
and purity." With 30-years experience in serving the Japanese
medical community with premium-quality Kampo products, Honso
is expanding its long-term commitment to U.S. consumers and
complementary/alternative medicine practitioners. Principles
of Sho-saiko-to Medicine:
"Kampo refers to a new concept of medicine where, while
respecting the observation method and thinking of traditional
Oriental medicine, has been improved by the incorporation
of scientific, diagnostic and consultation methods. It has
been re-edited into a more practical and understandable form
for both the layman and the practitioner. It is a new area
of medicine which blends the different medicine concepts of
the Oriental and West by applying the knowledge of both to
a single, common patient, and to achieve better therapeutic
efficacy."

for Oriental Medicine. Professor of Medicine, Toyama Medical
and Pharmaceutical University, Japan

KAMPO IS...
A unique, ancient Oriental herbal medicine that has been
revived in modern Japan because of its widespread acceptance
and use. Since 1967, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare
has approved of four Kampo formulas deemed worthy of use by
including them on a reimbursement list under the national
health insurance plan. As of 1996, 148 formulas have been
approved. Today 75% of Japanese physicians use Kampo in combination
with their conventional medical prescription.

CHOOSE KAMPO BECAUSE ...
Japanese formulas use precise combinations of herbs within
standardized amounts in contrast to other oriental herbal
medicine systems. Because of Kampo's rise in usage, more scientists
and physicians have been testing Kampo products in a scientific
environment. The past 40 years have included hundreds of
research papers published on major peer-reviewed medical journals
on such topics as active components, mechanisms of actions
and clinical effects.
Kampo is different from "Western-style" herbology,
which concentrates on individual herb and their extraction.
Multiple raw herbs are premixed, according to the ancient
formulas, and then performing extraction on the mixture. The
combination of specific herbs and certain extraction processes
creates a remedy most effective than the total of each herb
extracted individually. To emphasize this, each Honso product
label states the raw herb amounts as they are before the extraction
process takes place.
